About Fintan Whelan

Despite the appearance of serendipity, Whelan's technique involves constant assessment, measurement and exploration of pigments and their configurations, combined with varnishes, oils and a variety of materials.

His art is both deeply abstract and grounded in the physical realities of whatever he's using to create it. All these variations determine a complex whole that is essential in shaping an artwork. Whelan's method of painting is characterised by an immediacy of process and an urgency of vision, which he has been developing over the last decade.

The content of his paintings alludes to his living environment in the broadest sense, where any kind of objects or any kind of sensations somehow creep into the paintings. This exhibition is an exploration of how the fragility of pictorial illusion subsists amid a world of contingencies.

In a contemporary visual culture in which images flood and overwhelm us, Whelan's aim is to re-establish our sense of images as elusive, mysterious and hard-won.
